The specialized professionals of ‘The Smile of the Child’ next to refugee and migrant children in Greece

31 October 2018

Thanks to its specialized professionals “The Smile of the Child” provides with the support of the EU Humanitarian Aid medical and psychosocial services for refugee and migrant children in Greece.

Scientific and field personnel of psychologists and social workers, staff of the Operational Emergency Center of the Organization, provide prevention and intervention services for the protection of children at risk such as registration of named and anonymous reports and reporting to the authorities, activation of procedures of protection and care, direct intervention for children at risk, counselling support, interpretation services via telephone, guidance, interconnection and provision of information.

Respectively, a team of specialized professionals, including social workers, psychologists, pediatricians, nurses and physiotherapists are next to children with increased medical needs who are accommodated in apartments in Athens and Thessaloniki and provide services such as pediatric home treatment, medical and nursery care, physiotherapy, psychosocial support and assistance in medical consultations.

Equally important is the contribution of the interpreters of the Organization who facilitate on a daily basis the effective communication between the staff and the refugee and migrant children and their families.

The implementation of the “Direct and Holistic Medical and Psychosocial Intervention for Refugee and Migrant Children in Danger in Greece” project requires the close and continuous cooperation between the teams of ‘The Smile of the Child’, the authorities and the organizations that have the overall oversight of the beneficiaries.
