PRESS RELEASE

Athens, October 12, 2020

The Youth Group on Rights of the Child of the  European Student Volunteer Network “YouSmile” participates in the project "Project A12" aiming at promoting child participation in decision-making processes in areas related to children's rights

The organization “The Smile of the Child” (TSoC) implements the project "Project A12" from February 2020 to August 2021. The aim of the project is to promote child participation in decision-making processes in areas related to children's rights, by enhancing their knowledge and skills regarding their rights, with an emphasis on the right to participate.

When children and young people learn to communicate their opinions, take responsibilities and make decisions, they develop a sense of belonging, a sense of justice, responsibility and solidarity. That is the reason why the project was named "Project A12" inspired by the Article 12 of the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, which recognizes the right of every child to express an opinion and to have that opinion heard.

Due to the emergency conditions caused by the coronavirus pandemic, the meetings of the project A12 have been rescheduled. So far, the following meetings have taken place:

-On 23 February 2020, a meeting held between the Youth Group on Rights of the Child of “YouSmile” and other stakeholders. The topic of discussion was the refugee crisis and its consequences. Emphasis was placed on detention conditions in camps as well as on the important issue of unaccompanied minors.

- On 27 September 2020, the second meeting of the Youth Group on Rights of the Child of “YouSmile” with stakeholders took place and the main topic of discussion was the racism. Particularly, it was discussed the main causes of racism such as xenophobia and nationalism and ways to overcome them.
