Little Eva’s story came to “The Smile of the Child” in February 2005, when her mother sought help because her three-year-old daughter had been abducted by her biological father. Taking advantage of a planned outing with her, he took her to England without her mother’s consent.

With the immediate mobilization of “Smile,” the Greek and British authorities, Interpol, and international organizations dealing with parental abductions, a difficult struggle began. A few months later, the British courts ruled that Eva should be returned to Greece with her mother.

After her safe return, “The Smile of the Child” stood by Eva and her family every step of the way, providing psychosocial support and counseling for several years. Communication with the family continued in the years that followed, demonstrating that caring for a child does not end with the resolution of a case, but continues as long as there is a need.

Today, through Eva’s words—more than twenty years later—we see what timely protection, meaningful support, and genuine concern can mean for a child’s life.

Eva has now moved on with her life; she is working on her PhD and moving forward with dreams, goals, and strength. As she herself shares, what she takes away from her difficult experience is not just what happened, but above all the people who stepped up, worked together, and truly cared about her.

For Eva, “The Smile of the Child” symbolizes hope and protection. Her journey proves that when a child is protected and supported in the right way, they can leave their difficulties behind and build their future with strength and self-confidence.

Her words are, for all of us, the greatest confirmation that genuine care can change not only a difficult moment, but the entire course of a life.
