Multi-sectoral assistance to and protection of migrants and refugees stranded in Greece (Lesvos)

“The Smile of the Child” was the implementing partner of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in the project “Multi-sectoral assistance to and protection of migrants and refugees stranded in Greece” financed by European Union Humanitarian Aid (ECHO). The project concerned the establishment of the Home of the “The Smile of the Child” in the Akrotiri area of Mytilene on the island of Lesvos aiming at :

- The creation of thirteen (13) places for unaccompanied minors refugees, girls aged 3 months to 17 years and boys aged from 3 months to 10 years who are in Greece without being accompanied by a parent, in accordance with Greek law and for as long as their parental responsibility is not entrusted to another person.
- The creation of twelve (12) places for children, girls aged 3 months to 17 years and boys aged 3 months to 10 years of age, irrespective of nationality, who live in Greece and have been removed from their family environment by public prosecution, for reasons of abuse or neglect or serious social conditions.

The implementation of the project was based on the long - term experience of "The Smile of the Child" through the development of a mixed model of Homes for Children in danger that operates at a national level and ensures holistically the family care and warmth for both children of Greek or other origin that have been separated from their family environment by the prosecutor due to abuse, neglect or severe social conditions and refugee unaccompanied minors who are at great risk of being persecuted, disappearance victims of trafficking or smuggling.

The duration of the project was six (6) months (from 01/02/2017 to 31/07/2017) and funding covers the cost of the establishment of the Home.
