“Leaving with Care – Living with Care” (CARE)

“The Smile of the Child” announces the launch of the project entitled “Leaving with Care –  Living with Care” (CARE) , aiming at what can first responders (social workers, police officers, medical practitioners, helpline operators) do to reduce the trauma that children may experience during the processes of investigation, removal & out-of-home placement.

 

The project will be implemented in transnational level and specifically in 4 countries (Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Croatia) , with 31 months duration. CARE project is co-funded by the European Union’s Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme (2014-2020).


“The Smile of the Child” is project’s Coordinator as well as project’s partners are :  i. “SOS IL TELEFONO AZZURRO ONLUS” association from Italy,  ii. the organization “HOPE FOR CHILDREN” from Cyprus and iii. the organization “BRAVE PHONE”  from Croatia.

 

In Greece, project’s activities will take place in Athens, Patra and Thessaloniki with implementing partner “The Smile of the Child” and with the support of Hellenic Police and the General Prosecutor of the Supreme Court of Greece.

 

The project aims:

  • to promote intersectoral coordination, cooperation & mutual understanding among public authorities, NGOs & educational institutions on trauma-informed responses to ACEs during these processes,
  • to  improve, strengthen & harmonize first responders’ skills, capacities & practices on trauma-informed practices & responses,
  • to increase the awareness of teachers about the effects of trauma on children,
  • the empowerment of children in residential care & enhancement of child participation,
  • to exchange good practices & experiences among different EU countries.

More particularly, project’s activities include:

  • Establishment of national expert working groups with the participation of experts from police, prosecutor, social service, medical and nursing staff, residential care providers, helpline operators, teachers
  • Development of European set of Trauma – informed approaches
  • Training of first responders (social workers, police officers, medical practitioners, helpline operators)
  • Integration & evaluation of ACE/trauma-informed approaches
  • Policy recommendations handbook
  • Teachers’  information and awareness raising activities
  • Awareness raising documentary with children’s voices.

At the end of the project,  approaches and tools will be developed at EU level that will contribute to better detection, identification & response to ACEs & reducing the trauma of investigation, removal & out-of-home placement in CAN cases , as well as the  cooperation between NGOs & public authorities, institutions on these issues will be strengthen.
